Agreed. The domain was taken so we opted for "my" as a prefix. Since it's B to C, I think it still works and it keeps it friendly/personable. Thanks for the comment!

Good name choice. I do wonder if it was necessary to add "My" to the name. Baby Compass probably would be a better choice, maybe the name wasn't available. Good blog.

Rolls-Royce example was bang on. In tough times, you see a lot of big companies scrambling so hard for the next dollar, they end up destroying any branding they had in place. I'm curious to see how the ones who went the route of severe sales, cheaper models, and door crasher specials will recover their reputations. Great article!

Great advice! Branding is definitely so very important to a company's success. And although time-consuming as you mentioned, defining a brand is something every company should do. When customers and prospects see business cards, brochure printing ads, TV commercials, and more, a consistent brand message is what will make these advertisements stick in their heads. A defined brand is what will cause them to visit or call a certain company the next time they need those specific services or products.

JP -- Good point. Beating the #1 player is always tough, especially if they (Google) are doing a decent job. The car company Avis actually ran an ad campaign years ago to that effect, telling people they were #2 (compared to Hertz) and therefore, "We try harder at Avis." It turned out to be one of the more famous campaigns but didn't lift Avis to #1.

I still think it's going to take both deep pockets (which Microsoft has) as well as a substantially superior user experience to gain any significant share of Google's search. We'll see.

Interesting post Phillip. I think Google will always have it over Microsoft in terms of branding. Your Pepsi example seems to be a good one in this case. Microsoft will probably do enough to grab the attention of those looking for a change - like Pepsi drinkers. But i don't know if Bing will be able to penetrate, and more importantly, entrench itself in the market like Google has.

Cheers, JP

Hi, I work for a local non-profit economic development agency. We will be relaunching our business consulting and coaching service using a team of outside and staff consultants to serve Southeast Alaska. Our old name was Business Asstance Center, which is dull. We want something catchy and quick. Can you help? Services include helping with business planning, obtaining financing, increasing profitability, expansion, purchasing/selling a business, managing life/work conflicts, etc.
Thanks,
Margaret
